A woman breaks free of a straitjacket and revels in her nudity. There’s smoking, red paint and a mysterious oil substance that is also on fire – and on her boobs.
This is an arty music video that doesn’t mean a lot but it looks fantastic. As you’re probably aware, I’m a big fan of minimalist lighting and black backgrounds. And I’m not at all sure what substance it is that produces flames but it looks cool.

Husbands Ian and James head into the woods with their dogs and enjoy some pleasant moments getting nude and kissing in the great outdoors.

Director Vincent Keith took this real-life couple into Epping Forest for the shoot.

The blurb: The focus of the project was to capture the intimacy and energy between these two beautiful men and life partners. Ian and James also brought their dogs for a nice explore in the woods. While the conditions were somewhat challenging with the changeable weather and the cold, the dappled light through the trees created a beautiful atmosphere both for still and video work.

This film’s erotic content is a natural expression of the passion shared between the two men, and the somewhat unusual experience of being naked in a park where ramblers might come upon us at any time. Ian said that he was surprised by how exhilarating an experience it was.

Sex Life

In an attempt to get his wife interested in sex, a man dresses up as Frank-N-Furter a few weeks after the arrival of their first child. This leads to a revealing conversation about their relationship – and a rather impressive song and dance number.

This film isn’t erotic in any way but it does deal with the nuances of sexuality and relationships in a wonderful way so I thought it would be good to share in the Film Festival category. As a Rocky Horror fan, the Frank-N-Furter outfit got my attention but it was held by the quality acting and the nuanced drama that explores how relationships can change, especially in the wake of a new baby.

The blurb: Dan and Mia haven’t had sex since before the birth of their son. Three months on, Dan feels forced to take extreme action and makes the decision to dress as Dr. Frank-N-Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show in a ham-fisted attempt to get Mia back in the mood. Not getting the reaction he expected it sparks off a comedic and revealing conversation about the most intimate parts of their relationship.

The Blindness Of The Woods

A love triangle develops between a blind woman, a lumberjack and… a bear. An unusual Nordic love story enacted by people wearing full body woolen costumes.

I remember seeing this film at the 2008 Berlin Porn Film Festival and feeling rather perplexed but also amused by it. I’m glad I’ve finally discovered it online.

The blurb: The Blindness of the Woods develops a narrative that combines the naive simplicity of fairy tales with the Nordic erotic movies from the 70’s. These two genders are supposed never to meet, bringing about mixed feelings in the audience who are uncertain about feeling moved as they watch the cute woolen characters or getting sexually aroused as they see them having sex. Ulrika, a blind woman who lives isolated in a cabin in the cold woods of Sweden, suffers from the freezing winter loneliness. One day, Hans, a curt lumberjack, comes across her offering not only his logs to warm up but also his love. A love and sex story unfolds between the blind woman and the lumberjack which is being witnessed by the voyeuristic character Bear Bjorn. Her love fullfilment is overshadowed by Hans’ betrayal who takes advantage of her condition, stealing her belongings.This scenario pushes Bear Bjorn to act on Ulrika’s behalf doing justice to her in his own hands as he gets rid of the lumberjack, eventually wrapping up the love circle.

A short, beautiful film that focuses on the emotion and love that accompanies sex for many people. Shot with real-life couples.

An article in Nowness says that Will Hoffman and Julius Metoyer set out to experiment with sex on film but felt an emotional element was missing. They recruited couples via Craigslist.

“Sex scenes in narrative films are always so-so, and porn is just on a whole other level of insincerity. We wanted to make a film that wasn’t about watching sex, but instead, triggered memories of the way you felt when emotionally surrendered with a partner. That moment where you let go of judgment or self-consciousness and just open yourself up to impulse and desire.”

I really liked the surreal feeling of this short film. It isn’t particularly explicit but it draws you in and creates a wonderful sense of erotic tension.

The clitoris has a varied history, often reviled, erased and considered to be a source of sin. And then we learned how big it really was. This amusing music video gives a potted history of the clitoris, complete with witty diagrams, impressive sets and a human clitoris costume. And it’s really catchy.

I’m not a fan of smoking, nor of smoking-related porn, but this simple short film held me enough to watch to the end. It’s both mesmerizing and slightly disturbing to watch the smoke curling from her mouth. The creepy music suggests the smoke may be a spirit or ghost.

Dusty’s mother drops dead the first time he masturbates, leading him to conclude that he as a dark superpower.

This coming-of-age film is at turns hilarious, sad and incredibly moving. Through minimal dialogue and a superb lead, the film explores the awkwardness of teenage sexuality, grief and family relationships. Well worth the 20 minutes.

Matt Kazman is a filmmaker from Toronto who lives and works in the US. He’s had success with a variety of short films. Killer is his most successful to date. Apparently the film isn’t totally autobiographical (phew!). He told ShortOfTheWeek: “Thankfully, ‘Killer’ isn’t based on a personal experience, but it came from a personal place. When I was a kid, I’d hear all these theories about sex, and life in general, from friends, older siblings, etc. As a result, I’d make up my own ideas about these things without actually knowing anything, and once I got older, I’d obviously figure out that some of those ideas were misguided. I think that’s a major part of growing up – finding out that some of your notions about life are wrong. Sometimes that’s a good thing, and sometime’s it’s not. I wanted to make a movie about how bittersweet that can be.”

The director’s artist statement:

My film and video practice uses cinematic language as a primary tool in my investigations of gender identity, queer sexuality, and self awareness through a lens of humor and popular culture. I often work with metaphors, creating new metaphors and literalizing pre-existing ones, with the intention of shifting the meanings of the metaphors or deconstructing them to render them useless. Experimenting with shifting genres and contexts, my work thematically and aesthetically explores the intersection of opposites (such as masculinity/femininity, high brow/low brow, filth/sparkle, etc.) and intentionally subverts learned ideals, working towards a reality in which the interplay of these opposites can create the unexpected.

My work celebrates ‘otherness’, bringing the fringe into a spotlight, and giving atypical expressions of identity, gender, individualism, and sexuality the center stage treatment.
